<What is Torinoko of Japanese paper?>
"Torinoko” is one of the names for gampi paper used since the Middle Ages, and according to the ‘Shimogakushu’ (a collection of writings by a scholar of the Heian period (1444)), it derives from the color of the paper, which resembles the color of an eggshell. In Echizen, Torinoko-gami was already being made in the Muromachi period (1333-1573), and by the 18th century, large-size paper (over three feet wide) was also being made, and since the Meiji period (1868-1912), sliding door paper has been widely used.
<Features>
Torinoko-gami is a handmade washi made mainly from gampi (gampi is a type of Japanese paper), and has a glossy, smooth, and dense texture. It is used as support for Japanese-style paintings, paper for woodblock prints, calligraphy paper, and fusuma paper (sliding door paper).
In the early Heian period, it was called hishi.
It is not clear when it became commonly known as Torinoko,
The name “hi-gami” is derived from the color of the paper, which resembles a bird's egg.
It is characterized by its beautiful and elegant skin, as well as its durability and resistance to deterioration, which is why it was used for high-grade records to be kept for many years.
In ancient times, it was the paper of choice for imperial anthologies, sutras, and poetry anthologies.
In Japan, it has long been used as fusumagami (sliding door paper) because of its unique characteristics.
It is also widely used as binding paper, text paper, printing paper, tatami paper, and resign paper.
Tori no ko-gami is characterized by its thickness and glossy surface.
Various colors of Torinoko-gami have been made since ancient times.
It is also used for pamphlets, flyers, menu lists, etc.
